Graphite wood shafts are the preferred choice for your fairway woods and driver. But between material, flex, weight, kick point, and torque, where do you begin? Here are some things to keep in mind.

Graphite shafts are lighter than steel shafts, meaning your swing speed will be faster and the ball will in many cases travel further. They also lessen that pesky sting-your-hands sensation that comes when the clubhead makes contact with the ball.

Flex is largely determined by swing speed. L (ladies) and A (senior) flexes help those with slower swing speeds hit the ball faster and with greater impact. R (regular) and S (stiff) flexes are for those with more power in their swing. Shaft weight is an individual choice based on what feels right to the player. Lighter shafts, as mentioned, can increase distance and speed, but also result in less control.

Torque is how much resistance the shaft has to twisting when impact with the ball occurs. Graphite twists more than steel. Kick point is the spot where the shaft bends: a lower kick point means higher ball trajectory. Finally, there’s shaft length, which is determined by more than just your height. Longer shafts produce extra distance, whereas shorter shafts make for more accurate shots.
