Undersize grips are generally 1/64 of a inch smaller than a standard grip. Think such a tiny difference is unimportant? Think again. Since the size you choose is the most important factor to consider when selecting a grip, there are golfers who can improve their game by using an undersize grip. How so?

A too-large grip can actually hinder some players’ ability to control the club when it hits the ball. The club may come loose at the bottom of the swing, which can cause you inadvertently to slice. In other words, it will send the ball veering off in a direction to the right or the left of your target. What’s more, if your swing is more often of the “outside-to-inside” type, a smaller grip can help keep the ball’s flight straight.

Here is one way to estimate what size grip you might want to play. In general, if your hand measures less than 7 inches from the tip of your middle finger to the spot where your wrist bends, you might be in need of an undersize grip.
