As the highest-lofted clubs in your bag, the right wedges can get you out of tricky situations, effectively helping to lower your score when another type of club just won’t cut it.

Although your iron set should include a pitching wedge already, it’s the lowest lofted wedge out there, meaning that it won’t be much help when you need high trajectory. Enter the sand wedge. With lofts generally ranging from 54° to 58°, it’s the club you’ll be reaching for when you hit a sand trap or find your ball in the side bunker of the green.

A gap wedge (also known as an approach wedge) ranges from about 50° to 53° and is a vital part of your set. But how to decide between a gap wedge in your iron set or a separate, “classic” wedge? Here’s something to keep in mind: an iron set gap wedge is more about performance, offering a little more distance, while a classic 50° to 53° wedge is focused more on precision.

A discussion of wedges wouldn’t be complete without mention of the highest-lofted club you can get: the lob wedge. With lofts as high as 59° all the way up to 68°, this is the club you’ll want to use when you need to get over hazards. It produces a shot with a very high arc, so its benefits in delicate situations can be nothing short of incredible.

ValueGolf.com offers wedges with lofts as low as 50° in the popular Acer XB Satin line to lofts as high as 64° in both the XB and Professional Open 690 Satin lines (which also has a 68°). We also offer a variety of hybrid heads here, as well as component drivers, fairway woods, irons, and putters.
